There’s no open claim. If you searched “class action lawsuit turbotax” hoping to file, the big payout was the $141 million deal Intuit reached with all 50 state attorneys general in May 2022. It paid about 4.4 million consumers nationwide automatically, by check, in May 2023. Reissues have stopped, and uncashed money moved to state unclaimed property in most states. Newer cases are still in court with nothing to claim.

Can You Still Get a TurboTax Settlement Check?

Not a paper one. The administrator’s site, run by Rust Consulting, says reissue requests are no longer accepted. When we checked it in September 2026, it still showed a “Last Updated: September 2024” stamp. Uncashed money followed this path:

  1. May 2023: checks mailed to the named taxpayer.
  2. March 2024: resent through PayPal to the email you used to file your taxes for 2016, 2017, or 2018, with 30 days to accept.
  3. April 2024: a second 30-day try through Venmo, same email only.
  4. After that: for most states, the money went to unclaimed property where you filed.

Never cashed yours? Search your state’s unclaimed property database under your name. That’s the one route left. Still holding an old check? The site can verify it with the Claimant ID and check number on the stub.

Who Qualified, and Why Most Got About $30

You qualified only if all of this was true for tax year 2016, 2017, or 2018:

  • You were eligible for the Intuit IRS Free File product.
  • You started in Free Edition, were told you didn’t qualify, then paid to file your federal tax returns.
  • You hadn’t used Free File in an earlier year.

Payment scaled with qualifying years: most got $29 to $30, and three qualifying years paid about $85, per CBS News. California alone had over 400,000 recipients. Unsure how to report it? See whether settlement money is taxable.

Why the Consumer Class Action Never Paid Out

Arbitration. The Intuit TurboTax terms require individual arbitration, and in Dohrmann v. Intuit (2020) the Ninth Circuit enforced that clause. Private Free File suits, which allege Intuit hid free tax filing from eligible users, were consolidated in the Northern District of California. In 2021 Judge Charles Breyer rejected a proposed $40 million deal as a way to sidestep thousands of arbitration claims customers had already filed. So the state deal, not a court-approved class case, is what paid consumers.

The FTC “Free” Ads Order and Its 2026 Reversal

In January 2024 the Federal Trade Commission ruled the “free” tax preparation ads deceptive and barred calling a product free unless it’s free for everyone or the ad discloses how many taxpayers qualify. It ordered no refunds. On March 20, 2026, the Fifth Circuit vacated the order, holding the FTC’s in-house trial violated the separation of powers. The business-practice commitments Intuit made to the states still apply.

TurboTax Settlement FAQ

Is there a class action lawsuit against TurboTax right now?

Yes, several are pending, but none is paying. The refund advance, fake-return, and investor cases were at early stages in September 2026, with no fund or claim form.

How do I get TurboTax settlement money?

You can’t file for it anymore. Payments were automatic in 2023, and uncashed money now sits with state unclaimed property programs in most states.

How do I know if I qualified?

Rust Consulting emailed everyone who qualified in 2023. Eligibility covered people who paid in 2016, 2017, or 2018 while they qualified for IRS Free File.

Is a message about a TurboTax payment legit?

Be suspicious. The administrator says you never pay money or give account information to receive a payment, and no new payout was announced in 2026.
